The fluorescent hospital lights glared menacingly with a few occasional and irritating flickers in this poverty-stricken country. The sickening smell of sterilized pans and medicine that never lifted anyone's spirits, hung thickly in the diseased air. Pat set his glass of water on the white desk beside his appointed bed. The tasteless liquid was unable to clear the weird taste in his mouth. His hands reached for a magazine and began to flip through it carelessly.He was paying no particular interest to any of the articles until he came across one page that made his eyes linger on it longer. The page portrayed a picture taken expertly by a professional. The colourful photograph showed a laughing girl wearing a big straw hat, running joyously in a large green meadow. Feeling the happiness and blissfulness flowing out from the glossy page, Pat's fingers quivered and tears brim his eyes. The thought of the happiness and enjoyment he never had before and never would was unbearable.
